December 2022

• The lab receives a DURIP award from the Department of Defense to build an inert atmosphere STM-BJ system and purchase advanced synthesis equipment.

• The lab celebrates the end to a great year with their annual Secret Santa gift exchange and a fun night at the Riverside Game Lab!


November 2022

• Tim gives an invited talk at Japan-US Workshop on Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Materials in Mishima, Japan. Tim Jr. is selected as a poster prize winner there!


October 2022

• Tim gives an invited talk at the Atomically Precise Nanochemistry Gordon Conference. Matt and Tim Jr. do a stellar job presenting posters there. Matt also gave a talk at the Atomically Precise Nanochemistry GRS!


September 2022

• Imex and Matt give excellent talks at their home undergraduate institutions, Cal State Northridge and Cal State Channel Islands.

• Aracely Gonzalez joins the lab as an undergraduate researcher. Welcome Aracely!


August 2022

• Tim gives an invited talk at the Future Leaders Network for Nanoscale Energy Harvesting Workshop at the University of Warwick.

• The group receives its first federal grant! Thanks to the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for funding our work on silicon diamondoids under the Organic Materials Chemistry Program.

• Lamia, Mack, and Anika give poster presentations at the UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium. Congrats to Anika and Mack for wining poster prizes for their work on silicon diamondoids.

• Anika wraps up a productive summer of research in the MacREU program by presenting a poster at the MacREU symposium.


July 2022

• Tim is featured in an author profile by Angewandte Chemie.

• Nhien is selected to attend the ACS Summer School on Sustainability. Congrats Nhien!


June 2022

• Tim Jr is selected as a CSU Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive Program (CDIP) Fellow! Congrats Tim!

• Tim Jr and Matt give outstanding oral presentations at the Southern California Organometallics Meeting.

• Imex, Lan, and Jacob pass their oral qualifying exams and are now officially Ph.D. candidates!

• Tim gives an invited talk at the Inorganic Chemistry Gordon Research Conference.


May 2022

• The lab’s first research article led by Tim Siu is published in Angewandte Chemie!

• Jennifer Nguyen joins the lab as an undergraduate researcher. Welcome Jennifer!

• Undergraduate researcher Lamia Haque joins the lab.

• Graduate student Ashley Pimentel joins the lab and the STM-BJ subgroup.

• Nhien Nguyen is named as a Finalist for the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Poster Awards Competition. Congrats Nhien!



December 2021

• Undergraduate researchers Isabelle, Miku, and Josh win first prize in UCR’s SciComm Student Video Competition! Check out the awesome video they made about why our lab is interested in the bottom-up chemical synthesis of silicon nanoelectronics.


October 2021

• The lab is recommended to receive an ACS PRF Doctoral New Investigator grant. This award will fund our efforts to use silane polymerization to enforce the cofacial stacking of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.


September 2021

• The lab receives funding from the UC Cancer Research Coordinating Committee.


August 2021

• McKinley (Mack) Durham and Anika Manapul join the lab as undergraduate researchers working with Tim Jr. Welcome Mack and Anika!

• Tim is invited to give a talk at the virtual IUPAC 2021 Conference.


July 2021

• Tim is named a Hellman Faculty Fellow.

• Lan, Nhien, and Matt publish a perspective article in the Journal of Materials Chemistry C for the 2021 Emerging Investigators Issue.


June 2021

• Josh re-joins us for the summer as a MacREU Fellow.

• Matt, Tim Jr, and Nhien all pass their oral qualifying exams! They celebrate with the group at Spark Karaoke in Rowland Heights.

• The lab bids farewell to Kirllos Boctor, our first undergraduate researcher. Kiro was a key part in building our lab’s research program and will be sorely missed.


May 2021

• Undergraduate student Isabelle Tran joins the laboratory, working with graduate student Jacob Seo. Welcome, Isabelle!

• The lab receives funding from UC Riverside Research and Economic Development Office’s 2021 Extramural Funding Opportunity Preparation Award (EFOPA).


April 2021

• Undergraduate student Miku Shimono joins the laboratory, working with graduate student Imex Aguirre Cardenas. Welcome, Miku!

• Tim Jr, Josh, and Matt publish a perspective article in Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. entitled “Single-Cluster Electronics”

• The group is all vaccinated, and goes mini golfing to celebrate!


March 2021

• Jacob and Imex carry out a series of outreach activities with Taft Elementary School, where students tested hypotheses virtually over Google Meets about elephant toothpaste and bubble making.


January 2021

• Matt and Nhien publish an article in the Journal of Chemical Education on using TikTok as an education and outreach tool in General Chemistry courses. These videos received over 1.1 million views!

• Nhien receives an Inclusive Excellence Travel Fund Award!

 The Su Lab has re-opened on a limited basis.

• Raasi Bommu has joined the lab as an undergraduate researcher! She will be making hydrogels for super-resolution biological imaging.

• The lab welcomes new graduate students Jacob Seo and Imex Aguirre Cardenas.

• Tim is awarded a Regents Faculty Fellowship. Thanks to the UCR Academic Senate for research support!

Josh Wong is selected as a RISE CNAS Scholar. Josh will receive a stipend to perform DFT calculations on silicon cluster compounds over the summer. Way to go, Josh!

Tim is interviewed by journalist Dr. Karen Kwon in Massive Science about the #chemclout challenge in his general chemistry course CHEM 001B. Thanks Karen, it was fun talking with you!

• Former graduate student Molly Powers is recognized with an “Honorable Mention” by the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program competition. Congratulations Molly, we are so proud of you! See the UCR news article about it here.

• The lab shuts down indefinitely as part of UCR’s efforts to curb coronavirus spread :(

• The lab welcomes first-year undergraduate researcher Joshua Wong to Team Silicon!

January 2020

• The lab now has the capability to separate oligomers and polymers using the JAI LaboACE LC-5060 for preparatory gel permeation chromatography and HPLC.

• We now have most of our core equipment - check it out on our virtual lab tour. Thanks to Profs. Ming Lee Tang and Dave Martin for their generous equipment donations to our lab!


December 2019

• The Su Lab publishes its first paper! Tim Jr. writes an ACS First Reactions perspective highlighting conductive 2D materials.

• The lab rings in its first holiday with its inaugural White Elephant gift exchange and Holiday Karaoke at Moxie Lounge. We also say goodbye to Molly Powers as she pursues her Ph.D. studies in the Northeast. We’ll miss you, Molly!
